About Us

Who We are: David King has lived in Salford from being a small child, David’s parents having moved to Salford in 1969 to be leaders of Windsor Church and Youth Centre.

the king familyHe went to school at Summerville CP and then Buile Hill High School, before starting work at the age of 16 as an apprentice painter and decorator. During his school years David became a Christian. In 1990 he went to Cliff College, the Methodist lay training college, to study for one year and then returned to Salford with a calling to set up the work of City Light Trust, along with Karen King.

Karen King was born in Salford where she has lived for the majority of her life. She went to Ordsall Board Primary School and then on to Broughton High School for Girls. After leaving school at the age of 17, she worked as a secretary, eventually moving to London in 1980, where she lived and worked for the next ten years. During her time in London she became a Christian, and in 1990 moved back to Salford where she met David.

In 1992 David and Karen married. They have one daughter, Elizabeth.

History of CLT and Inspiration

Inspiration is a project arm of City Light Trust.
The work of CLT started in 1991 and became a registered charity in February 1992.

Born out of a vision given to David and Karen King to see the Christian message be available to children and young people of Salford in relevant ways, in both word and deed, CLT began working with local churches in the Ordsall and Pendleton areas of Salford. Our aim was to be a bridge between the young people and the church by providing weekly clubs in the schools and the churches and through holiday clubs during school holidays. Help and support was given to the schools and we provided Christian R.E. lessons and assemblies on a weekly basis. This work went from strength to strength, with some of the clubs having ‘waiting lists’ for joining.

We worked on and ran various projects including: Bibles for Schools, Your Kingdom Come (going into many schools across Salford on behalf of the local churches, providing lessons and worship, being a bridge back into the churches); working in a special needs school providing worship and RE lessons; and Light (a youth meeting for the age 13+).

In 1998, David felt led by God to pray more for the City of Salford. He began to walk around the city and pray, covering a large circuit of the city on a monthly basis. Out of this prayer grew a vision for the whole of the city of Salford, to see the Church grow in unity, praying together and working together, and fully playing its part in transforming the city, making it credible for young people growing up to accept Jesus Christ as their Saviour and to fulfil their God-given destiny, without overwhelming odds being against them.

As the church began to pray and work more together, and work alongside other groups and agencies for the good of the City, big changes started to happen, including: regeneration projects in places such as Langworthy and Broughton, house prices began to rise across the city; funding for new schools; the BSF funding; improved exam results at GCSE level, and improved high school attendance.

This leads us on to the next step where Inspiration begins.
Having worked with thousands of children and young people across Salford, and dozens of churches, schools and other agencies, CLT begin their new project with a massive expectancy of what the God-given future of this City of Salford is and the role and destiny of the church in it.

Our aims are:

• To raise the level of intercessory and informed prayer for the City of Salford and its people
• To help increase, in availability and in quality, Preaching and Teaching which will help us to understand and apply the lessons God wants us to learn and which we can put into practice as we work towards transforming our city
• To act in an advisory and consultancy capacity in the area of transformation of the City of Salford by spending time with churches, Christian organisations and other groups and individuals.

This brings us up to date - but keep posted – we will be posting news, prayer updates and info on this site, informing you of what God is doing through our lives and through and in this great City of Salford.
